Cork Mat – Grip Tips

New cork mats can feel smooth at first — this is normal and improves with use, much like breaking in a new pair of shoes. Here are a few tips to get the best grip from day one:

Activate grip with moisture — cork contains a natural waxy substance called Suberin, which is activated by moisture. Lightly spray water on the areas where your hands and feet go before practice, or wipe down the mat with a damp cloth.

Keep it clean — a quick wipe-down before your first practice makes a big difference. Cork is naturally antimicrobial and dust-resistant, but dirt and sweat will build up over time.

Avoid lotions and oils — these coat the cork surface and reduce grip. Apply moisturizers after practice, not before.

Cork Mat – DIY Cleaner

For a deeper clean, mix 3 parts water with 1 part distilled white vinegar, add 5 drops of tea tree oil and 5 drops of your preferred essential oil (eucalyptus or lemongrass work well). Spray lightly, wipe down with a clean towel, and leave the mat to dry fully before rolling it up.
